Secure Wi-Fi Models and Specifications
Fortinet offers various options for managing a wireless environment. The FortiGate Wireless Controller is built into our FortiGate UTM platform. For more information on the various FortiGate models, including manageable AP capacity per model, please see the UTM webpage.

FortiAP access points are available in three models, all of which can be managed by the FortiGate or FortiAP Cloud. These are the FortiAP, FortiAP-S, and FortiAP-U.
FortiAP-S models include UTM services onboard, making them a perfect use case for remote installations.
FortiAP-U models are additionally manageable by our enterprise wireless controller appliances, allowing for growth to complex or large-scale deployments.

What license do I need to buy to enable the wireless controller on my FortiGate?
There are no additional licenses that need to be purchased to enable or use the Wireless Controller function on a FortiGate.
How many APs can my FortiGate manage?
Please refer to the FortiGate datasheet for your specific model for information on maximum AP capacity.
What license do I need to buy to enable my FortiWLC to adopt my access point?
There are no additional licenses that need to be purchased to enable or adopt an access point to a FortiWLC.
How many APs can my FortiWLM manage?
Please refer to the FortiWLM datasheet for your specific model for information on maximum AP capacity.
How many APs will I need for my building?
AP density will vary depending on the number of users and what applications need to be supported. Fortinet offers planning software: FortiPlanner to aid in determining the proper number and placement of APs.
What is the maximum amount of data that FortiPresence will keep?
FortiPresence Lite will save data for up to 7 days across up to 5 sites. FortiPresence PRO will save data for up to a year across any number of sites.
How many APs will I need for my building?
AP density will vary depending on the number of users and what applications need to be supported. Fortinet offers planning software: FortiPlanner to aid in determining the proper number and placement of APs.
Do I need to add a FortiDeploy line item to every order?
FortiDeploy only needs to be added to orders where you desire all items within the order to be addable to FortiCloud under a single FortiCloud activation number.
Do I need to add a FortiDeploy line item for every device on my PO?
No, only a single FortiDeploy line item is necessary per PO.
Can I still provision devices from the cloud without FortiDeploy?
Yes, FortiAPs can still be adopted and/or deployed individually from the cloud regardless of the use of FortiDeploy’s bulk provisioning offering.
