New Remcos RAT Variant is Spreading by Exploiting CVE-2017-11882

Several days ago, FortiGuard Labs captured a malware sample that was exploiting the Microsoft Office vulnerability CVE-2017-11882 patched by Microsoft last November. The sample is an RTF document with an Equation object. By analyzing its behavior in my test environment, I realized that it spreads a new variant of Remcos RAT, version “2.0.4 Pro,” that was released on April 7, 2018 from its official website. It is able to control the victim’s PC after infection.

Redefining Next Generation Firewalls

When the first firewalls were developed and deployed, their primary role was to act as sentinels monitoring traffic moving into, and sometimes out of the network. These devices would look at packets, network addresses, and ports to determine if data should be allowed through or blocked. A good analogy is airline travel. In the first few iterations of the firewall, data was simply checked to see if it had a ticket, and if its credentials were in order it were allowed to board the plane. Then application traffic took off, and first generation firewalls...

Sixteen years ago, Fortinet predicted the emergence of a digital economy where data would be driving business. We understood that this would require scaling the Internet to support hyperconnected network infrastructures. To accomplish this, network infrastructures that hadn’t fundamentally changed for decades would have to be radically redesigned. The challenge was that traditional security solutions were never designed to protect this new environment. To meet this challenge, we began engineering security tools around a universal operating...

Executive Insights: Securing the Digital World, Part I

Today’s digital economy is driving a technology revolution. Networks now include on-demand infrastructure, cloud-based services, software defined perimeters, and the growth of smart devices and IoT. Networks and infrastructures are also increasingly hyperconnected. What’s been missing is a security strategy to protect these new environments. The Internet was first begun as a point-to-point networking solution 50 years ago. The first generation of security was connection-oriented because it was primarily a firewall and VPN that...
