Learn About the Threat of Self-Organized Botnet Swarms
Additionally, Fortinet’s Global Security Strategist, Derek Manky, will be speaking to attendees on Thursday, August 9th at 2:30 p.m. in Business Hall Theater A. He will be leading a session on the increased need for trust, transparency, and action amid the rising threat of self-organized botnet swarms, one of the most troubling threats on the security horizon.
The global economy runs on technology that brings both unprecedented opportunities and unparalleled risk. The “big data bang” has resulted in an explosion of new network-connected devices—from 2 billion in 2006 to an estimated 200 billion by 2020. When combined with today’s hyper-connected digital environment we find ourselves with an ever-widening threat landscape that’s increasingly difficult to secure. To make matters worse, cybercriminals are now leveraging automation and AI capabilities to further boost their chances of successful attacks.
One of the most alarming trends that Fortinet’s global research teams have been tracking, cybercriminals are beginning to use that technology to create and deploy self-learning botnet swarms. By replacing traditional botnets with intelligent clusters of compromised devices, cybercriminals are creating more effective attack vectors from which they can exploit network vulnerabilities. These modern swarmbots can now identify and target multiple attack vectors network-wide simultaneously, and then apply machine learning combined with real-time intelligence sharing to quickly uncover and exploit vulnerabilities.
According to our recent Global Threat Landscape Report, 5% of botnet infections manage to persist within a network for more than a week even after active efforts to remove them have been applied. Given the sophistication of self-organized botnet swarms, the longer an attack manages to remain in-network, the greater the chance of it successfully identifying unique network vulnerabilities to be exploited and resources to mine, steal, and destroy.
Securing Networks Against Today’s Modern Cyberthreats
In order to properly secure their networks against botnet swarms and the other advanced cybersecurity threats targeting the cyber landscape, IT personnel and their solutions need to be able to detect, adapt, and respond at digital speeds—not just at a single point of attack, but simultaneously across the entire distributed attack surface. Only by integrating advanced security solutions that can see and address modern cyberthreats at machine speeds into a unified security framework can network defenses effectively keep up with and counter modern cybercriminal capabilities.
It’s especially important that the following cybersecurity best practices be considered as organizations work toward more establishing and maintaining an effective security posture:
Secure IoT Endpoints: As the number of devices connecting to a network increases, cybercriminals have more potential entryways into the network than ever before. Subsequently, these endpoints need to be properly secured and segmented to ensure the impact of a successful attack is mitigated as much as possible.
Implement a Security Fabric: By consolidating the variety of security solutions deployed across the network into an integrated and automated Security Fabric, IT personnel gain the ability to coordinate their security efforts across the threat landscape, providing a single-pane-of-glass view into their security posture and threat defense and the ability to automatically orchestrate a layered response.
Automate Threat Intelligence and Analysis: In order to maintain effective security posture, cybersecurity personnel need to be able to conduct threat analysis, employ advanced detection and protection, and deliver unified threat response at speeds that can thwart the abilities of modern cybercriminals. With this in mind, it’s crucial that, at a minimum, threat intelligence efforts leverage the same automation and AI that modern cybercriminals are incorporating into their attack capabilities.
