City of Thetford Mines Uses Fortinet Web Content Filtering to Protect Employees and Police Infrastructures

Real-time Scanning Allows City More Control Over Network Usage

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 7, 2010 - Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) - a leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced that the City of Thetford Mines in Quebec, Canada has deployed Fortinet FortiGate® multi-threat appliances for Web content filtering protection at its main city office and police station and FortiClient™ end-point security solution for travelling police officers.

Founded in 1892, the City of Thetford Mines boasts of being a hub for one of the world's largest asbestos-producing regions and a top five finalist for CBS Sports and Kraft Foods reality TV show “Kraft Hockeyville.”

Using FortiGate-110C appliances, the city has been able to have two separate networks but with a shared Internet connection. For security requirements, the police network needed to be separated from the city offices network. In addition, FortiClient end-point security systems are used within the police vehicles to enable police officers to have secure network access while travelling.

The FortiGuard® Web Filtering Service provides Web URL filtering for schools, libraries, government agencies and enterprise businesses of all sizes. It helps enable FortiGate, FortiWifi appliances and FortiClient end point security agents, to block access to harmful, inappropriate and dangerous Websites. Based on automated research tools and targeted research analysis, real-time updates enable organizations to apply highly-granular policies that filter Web access based on more than 75 Web content categories, and more than 47 million rated Websites - all continuously updated via the FortiGuard Network.

To report on all data traversing the network, a FortiAnalyzer™-100B is being used for reporting and logging. Prior to the FortiAnalyzer deployment, the city was only able to make presumptions as to what data was crossing the network. Now, they have quantifiable and tangible results that they can report on as needed.

“As a public entity, we really needed to be aware of what our users were accessing on the Internet and be able to appropriately manage access rights,” said Alexandre Meilleur, assistant director of public work department, at the City of Thetford Mines. “Since deploying the Fortinet appliances, we now have better control over our network as well as a much more secure environment.”

“Because of government funding, government agency employees are usually under tight control regarding what is allowed at work and what is not,” said Graham Bushkes, regional director for Fortinet Canada. “Fortinet eases the pain for network security administrators by offering a Web content filtering solution that is automatically updated and one that can have multiple security functions added to it with no network restructuring.”

Fortinet’s FortiGate systems are ASIC-accelerated security appliances that integrate essential security applications such as antivirus, firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, Web filtering, anti-spam and traffic shaping. All FortiGate systems are kept up to date automatically by Fortinet’s FortiGuard Network, which helps ensure protection against the most damaging, content-based threats from email and Web traffic such as viruses, worms, intrusions, other unwanted network traffic and more - around the clock and around the world.

We think highly of the FortiGate appliances ability to provide various security functions within one appliance, rather than forcing us to implement specific security software one by one. In addition, we liked its clear fee structure for initial licensing based on an annual per store cost. The deployment of FortiGate appliances enabled us to share a huge amount of data in a secure manner. We plan to drive further development, including a management system to understand all aspects of our outlets, such as photo shooting status, the delivery of commercial messages to our customers to highlight our outlets and the delivery of streaming images to our employees as part of training. Furthermore, we will consider developing a dedicated store system tailored for digital photography, rather than use a common POS system for retail outlets modified for photo studios.
