Syndicate Bank Secures Network and Data Assets with Fortinet UTM Solutions

Leading public sector bank in India selects Fortinet solution to enable multi-threat security for its extensive network of more than 2,200 branches and 18,000 customers

SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 11, 2007 - Fortinet® - a pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions -today announced that Syndicate Bank, one of India's largest public sector banks, has deployed four FortiGate™-5020 ATCA-compliant enterprise-class multi-threat security systems, four FortiGate™-5001 blades and one FortiManager™-400, to help protect its core banking systems and its nationwide network of bank branches and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). Syndicate Bank is the first public sector bank in India to implement UTM as the principal security technology for its core network and banking systems.

Syndicate Bank operates more than 2,200 branches across India and offers a range of services, from general banking to agricultural and personal loans. ecent rapid growth in banking transaction volume of around 40% and the bank's own initiative for networking and computerization of its branches and ATMs called the Centralized Banking Solution (CBS), prompted Syndicate Bank's IT department to undertake a comprehensive review of its security procedures and infrastructure.

Commenting on the selection and deployment of Fortinet solutions, Mr. Atul Kumar, assistant general manager, department of IT, Syndicate Bank explained: "Syndicate Bank previously had Cisco firewalls but they did not meet our present requirements to provide protection against the latest viruses, Trojans and other malware and to keep up with the growing number of banking transactions."

The bank's IT team had evaluated solutions from Check Point and Cisco before deciding on Fortinet's FortiGate-5000 Series chassis-based security systems and FortiManager management and monitoring solution. Fortinet's true UTM solution offered a larger range of features, superior performance, easier administration and scalability to better meet the growing needs of the bank.

The Fortinet solution was deployed by systems integrator Wipro Infotech at Syndicate Bank's data center in Mumbai and disaster recovery site in Bangalore, India. The deployment was carried out with very minimal interruption to the data center operations, and today, more than 18,000 banking users are securely connecting to these datacenters from branch offices, ATM network and Internet.

Fortinet's FortiGate-5000 Series of modular, chassis-based systems are the first to comply with the Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (AdvancedTCA or ATCA) standard and provide multi-gigabit performance and integrated multi-threat protection ideal to help secure high-bandwidth enterprise networks. The systems offer an array of essential security applications and services, including firewall, anti-virus, VPN, intrusion prevention, Web content filtering, anti-spam, Instant Messaging (IM) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) controls and traffic shaping. FortiGate systems are kept up to date automatically through FortiGuard™ subscription services, which provide continuous updates to help protect against the latest viruses, worms, Trojans and other threats - around the clock and around the world. Fortinet's FortiManager-400 is an integrated management and monitoring platform that minimizes the administrative effort required to deploy, configure, monitor and maintain the full range of network protection services provided by Fortinet products.

"Syndicate Bank is a breakthrough project for us in India in terms of its size and scope and also because the deployment is to protect mission-critical, performance-sensitive banking systems. This shows not only, the growing acceptance and adoption of integrated security systems by financial institutions but also our continued success in the financial services market," said Andre Stewart, vice president for EMEA, Fortinet.

Fortinet provides us with a secure environment in a simplified management scheme and very low maintenance. The performance of Fortinet's firewall is second to none. All the required security functions are truly integrated, and the ease of configuration of the FortiGate appliances allowed us to carry out the initial deployment within two weeks in spite of a relatively large and widespread installed base. Today, implementing new VPN tunnels with hotels is a matter of an hour or less. Our goal is to replace the existing ISDN connections from several thousand hotel customers with VPN connections.
