Fortinet Targets Large Enterprises & Service Providers with New FortiMail Secure Messaging Appliance

Also Announces New Firmware that Improves Antispam Detection and Accuracy, Addresses Regulatory Compliance, and Increases Performance

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 13, 2005 - Fortinet - the pioneer and market leader of Unified Threat Management and only provider of ASIC-accelerated, network-based multi-threat security systems for real-time network protection - today expanded and enhanced its family of FortiMail™ secure messaging appliances with the announcement of FortiMail-2000, a new secure messaging appliance targeted at very large enterprises, universities and managed security service providers (MSSPs), and unveiling of FortiMail 2.2, a major new firmware release for its FortiMail systems.

FortiMail systems are purpose built secure messaging appliances that offer antispam defense-in-depth at the network perimeter and the mail server - maximizing mail traffic performance by eliminating global spam at the network gateway, before it enters the corporate network. The systems include an antivirus detection engine for virus and spyware protection and complete email scanning. They seamlessly integrate with Fortinet's award-wining FortiGate™ security appliances and FortiGuard™ Antispam Service, which provides automatic updates to both FortiGate and FortiMail systems to reduce "obvious spam" at the network perimeter.

FortiMail 2.2 firmware adds the following to FortiMail systems:

  • Enhanced Spam Detection: Includes the following email content inspection features that bring antispam detection accuracy up to 97 percent.
    • Checksum Blocklist: Integrates with Fortinet's FortiGuard Antispam Service, which inspects all content within an email, including attachments and graphics, and applies a checksum against the content to determine whether it is spam.
    • Greylist: Checks "reply to," "from" and "IP" headers for new email senders that FortiMail does not recognize and delays response to suspicious email servers to determine the legitimacy of the sender.
    • Heuristics: Includes more than 600 rules that are indexed by a heuristics filter to inspect and score all parts of an email for spam characteristics.
    • Spam URI Real-time Blocklist: Monitors Universal Resource Identifiers (URIs) that are embedded in emails as another content-based technique to detect spam.
  • New Regulatory Compliance Features:
    • Archiving and Quarantining: Allows administrators to archive, store and quarantine any email coming into and leaving the network.
    • Customizable and Granular Spam Reports: Provides administrators with detailed spam summary reports, down to the individual user.
    • Inbound and Outbound Email Filtering and Reporting: Catches and provides full reports for spam coming into and leaving the network.
  • High Availability - Provides full data replication from one FortiMail system to another in active-passive mode to ensure data availability and redundancy.

FortiMail -2000 System: Solving the Large Email Security Challenges of Large Enterprises
Adding to its existing FortiMail-400 system designed for medium to large enterprises and remote branch offices, the new FortiMail-2000 system delivers scalable capacity, performance and enhanced 2.2 firmware features to secure messaging for high-volume, mission-critical infrastructures such as large enterprises, universities and MSSPs.

The FortiMail-2000 system includes four gigabit Ethernet ports to meet the robust antispam requirements of large enterprises and MSSPs without adversely affecting network performance. The FortiMail-2000 system has six 120 GB hot-swappable hard disk drives, supports configurable RAID-based storage (RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 or 50) and includes the performance capability to scan 6.8 million emails per day.

For flexible enterprise deployment, all FortiMail systems offer users three protective modes of operation: transparent mode, gateway mode and server mode. In transparent mode, the FortiMail system is placed in front of the existing email server without any changes to the existing email topology to provide seamless integration into existing network environments. In gateway mode, the FortiMail system is placed in front of the existing email server providing in-bound and out-bound email relay services, which allows for scanning of both in-bound and out-bound email messages. In server mode, the FortiMail system provides complete email server functionality in addition to antivirus and antispam functionality, which is ideal for medium sized companies and remote branch office locations.

"Unwanted email or spam continues to present serious security and regulatory compliance challenges for networks of all sizes - including large enterprises, universities and MSSPs," said Chris Roeckl, vice president of corporate marketing for Fortinet. "Our new FortiMail 2.2 firmware and new FortiMail-2000 system give customers greater functionality and choice in deploying the solution that best suits their email security capacity and performance needs while dramatically and rapidly decreasing the spam problem for network of all sizes."

As a small focused team working on a variety of high profile projects, our main priorities are the quality of our work and the service we provide. IT has never been top of the agenda; the construction industry as a whole continues to use traditional processes and still communicates via fax and post in many instances. However, as more of our partners are working electronically, our IT has become business critical, and the need to secure our IT assets was something we knew we had to address, but without our IT expenditure going through the roof.
