Hyundai Merchant Marine Keeps Network Attacks at Bay with Fortinet FortiGate Systems

Fortinet's High Performance Network Security Platforms Protect Hyundai's Corporate Headquarters and Overseas Branch Offices

SEOUL, Korea, January 10, 2004 - Fortinet - the confirmed market leader in Unified Threat Management (UTM) and only provider of ASIC-accelerated, network-based antivirus firewall systems for real-time network protection - today announced that Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., Ltd., has successfully deployed the FortiGate™-3000 and FortiGate-300 systems to protect its corporate headquarters and branch offices.

Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., Ltd. is one of the world's largest multi-modal marine transportation companies, with more than 80 offices and 4,500 domestic, international and shipboard employees around the world. The company uses a modern high-speed IT infrastructure and network to process customer orders and payments, and track and trace shipments in real-time. Its extensive, distributed network and critical information assets require a high-level of network security for tracking billions of transactions annually. A consistent target for network and content attacks, Hyundai Merchant Marine had made prior network security investments, but found that their multiple "point" solutions distributed across individual servers and user desktops and notebooks were difficult and inefficient to manage.

Hyundai sought a comprehensive, integrated large-scale network security solution that could be managed efficiently and easily, and could handle heavy network traffic. They engaged Fortinet Partner Dacom, a system integrator and provider of customized security services, to recommend and deploy an effective solution. Dacom deployed a Fortinet network security platform, which included the enterprise-class FortiGate-3000 system to secure Hyundai Merchant Marine's network backbone and corporate headquarters in Korea, and six FortiGate-300 units to protect local and foreign branch offices.

"With several layers of security in place, our former solution was cumbersome to manage and network performance was often affected by viruses, worms, and other network threats," said Koo Cheong-hoe, Manager of Information Technology Division at Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., Ltd. "Dacom, who re-architected our entire network security infrastructure, introduced us to Fortinet. Since implementing the FortiGate platform, we've experienced no damage from network or content threats and have been very satisfied with the high-performance and manageability of the systems."

Fortinet FortiGate systems offer a complete array of network and application-level security services - including antivirus, firewall, content filtering, VPN, network-based intrusion detection/prevention (IDP), anti-spam and traffic shaping. The systems are kept up-to-date automatically by Fortinet's FortiProtect™ Network, which provides continuous updates with worldwide staffing and distribution resources to protect against the latest viruses, worms, Trojans and network threats.

The FortiGate-3000 system is particularly suited for large enterprises with requirements for gigabit performance and exceptional reliability - with three tri-mode 10/100/1000 copper Gbps interfaces, high-availability support and redundant hot-swappable power supplies for robust reliability. Additionally, the FortiGate-3000 system provides granular security with independent security zones and policies mapped to virtual local area network (VLAN) tags. Well-suited for enterprises with large remote access populations, FortiGate-300 systems support 1,500 concurrent remote users, and provide exceptional price/performance and comprehensive security for remote and branch offices.

"Hyundai Merchant Marine has a large, globally-distributed network that requires high-performance and highly-effective protection against viruses, worms and other network and content threats" said JD Kim, Korea Country Manager for Fortinet. As hundreds of customers around the world have found, Fortinet's FortiGate integrated network security platform provides superior protection, performance and value. We're pleased to see Hyundai Merchant Marine reaping the benefits of our solutions."
