Fortinet Discovers Critical Vulnerability In Microsoft Office Excel

Data Vulnerability Allows Attackers to Perform Remote Code Execution

SUNNYVALE, Calif, - Mar 13, 2008 - Fortinet® - a pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced that Fortinet Global Security Research Team discovered a critical vulnerability in Microsoft™ Office Excel (CVE-2008-0114), which allows remote execution if a user opens a specially crafted Excel file, potentially leading to full compromise of the targeted system.

The vulnerability occurs in the handling of Microsoft Office Excel files’ Style record data. A remote attacker could craft a malicious Excel file and lure a potential victim into opening it. Upon opening, malicious code embedded in the file is executed, potentially allowing the attacker to take full control of the affected system.

This vulnerability affects the following software: Microsoft Office Excel 2000 Service Pack 3, Excel 2002 Service Pack 3, Excel 2003 Service Pack 2, Excel Viewer 2003, Excel 2007 and Office 2004 for Mac.

Microsoft Office Excel users should immediately apply the update provided by Microsoft on March 11, 2008. The Fortinet Global Security Team was critical in discovering this vulnerability, as noted in the Microsoft Security Bulletin http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-014.mspx.
