Fortinet Helps Byram Healthcare Meet HIPAA Compliance

Specialist of home-delivery medical supplies uses FortiGate integrated network security systems to protect against and gain intelligence on network threats

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 19, 2005 - Fortinet - the confirmed market leader in Unified Threat Management (UTM) and only provider of ASIC-accelerated, network-based antivirus firewall systems for real-time network protection - today announced that Byram Healthcare, a leading specialist of health care supplies to the home, has deployed Fortinet systems, security subscription services and reporting software to secure its mission critical network applications and block harmful, unwanted network traffic.

After deploying Fortinet's enterprise-class FortiGate™-800 systems, Byram Healthcare vastly reduced malicious content from entering its network while reaping the benefits of a feature rich security appliance to perform a comprehensive suite of security functions. To help ensure full compliance with the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Byram Healthcare chose Fortinet's FortiReporter™ Security Analyzer software to proactively monitor and log network usage as part of its ongoing due diligence in addressing government security regulations.

"Before our Fortinet deployment, Byram Healthcare had limited insight into low level network activity. With the changing nature of threats and the requirements for HIPAA compliance today, we proactively installed tools to ensure complete network security throughout the company's operations," said Richard Entrup, CIO for Byram Healthcare. "The FortiGate-800 system, and FortiReporter software installed transparently into our existing network, and we now catch more than 300 virus and malicious adware signatures daily. We can also detect and track true intrusion attempts, helping further to protect our user base of hundreds of users."

Like many other healthcare organizations evaluating security offerings in today's networked environments, Byram Healthcare sought a robust security solution capable of deploying into an existing network that matched existing network speed performance without complex network rearrangements. After evaluating leading security vendors, Byram Healthcare found that Fortinet's ASIC-accelerated security appliances and companion reporting capabilities best met its criteria, and offered unique benefits other vendors couldn't.

"Fortinet's FortiGate-800 system and FortiReporter software allowed Byram Healthcare to consolidate three separate security applications-intrusion prevention, antivirus, and security log analysis and reporting-- into a single platform, saving costs, administration and management," said Bill Schwing, senior sales consultant at Fortinet reseller Flagship Networks. "As network security needs evolve, point security solutions carry hidden costs down the road, in the form of increased management. Fortinet's integrated security appliances give users a choice of one or many security applications that save Byram Healthcare at least an hour a day of pure manual administration, as well as a per box licensing model that can save thousands of dollars annually in licensing fees."

Network Securely Transmits Critical Data, Online Updates Ensure Optimum Health
Byram Healthcare deployed a FortiGate-800 system at the Internet gateway outside of its mixed platform network consisting of IBM AIX, Linux and Windows, and Cisco infrastructure. In addition to antivirus, the FortiGate-800 system installed at the Internet gateway also performs firewall, intrusion detection and prevention (IDP) and LDAP proxy authentication. Bryam Healthcare also deployed Fortinet's FortiGuard Antivirus and FortiGuard IDP Subscription Services (formerly FortiProtect Services), which provide automatic antivirus and IDP signature updates to its FortiGate-800 system. Byram Healthcare also deployed Fortinet's FortiReporter Security Analyzer, which is a browser-based, analysis, reporting and monitoring solution that generates easy to understand reports across all FortiGate platform functionalities and profiles daily network traffic patterns, including which daily traffic is hostile or harmful.

As a leading provider of supplies and services to the heath care industry, Byram Healthcare was also cognizant of fulfilling ongoing compliance with HIPAA. Byram Healthcare's FortiGate-800 system receives automatic FortiGuard Antivirus and FortiGuard IDP Subscription Service updates from Fortinet's global FortiProtect™ Network. The combination of Fortinet's FortiGate systems and FortiGuard Subscription Services helps health care providers maintain HIPAA compliance and deliver Complete Content Protection™ through the integration of a broad range of cost-effective security functions in real-time -- including antivirus, firewall, VPN, IDP, content filtering, traffic shaping, spyware blocking, and anti-spam.

"In light of HIPAA compliance requirements, many health industry organizations are proactively working with security vendors to help align their business and technology needs," said Adam Stein, vice president of corporate marketing for Fortinet. "With our FortiGate systems, FortiGuard Subscription Services and reporting tools, we're proud to help Byram Healthcare's overall compliance strategy for HIPAA, while providing an entire network security approach that meets their mission-critical network applications' security needs."
